Do I have to be referred by a doctor or another clinician to work with you?

Accepted Answer

No. We can work together on any areas of health that are important to you. And if  you are working with a practitioner, or a team, I can work within that team to support you. Each situation is unique.

What qualifications do you have?

This is a really good question. Health coaches are not a regulated profession, so it is important to ask about credentials to ensure you are working with someone who meets your needs and expectations. I graduated from the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy in February 2021, and passed the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaches exam in June 2022. My earlier education includes a BA in East Asian Studies from McGill (1992) and a Masters of Public Health from Boston University (1997). In 2016 I completed the Back to Work program at the Rotman School of Business.

What is the scope of practice of a health coach?

Health coaches are trained in behaviour change. I provide personalized guidance and accountability in areas of lifestyle such as nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management and mindfulness. Health coaches do not diagnose, treat, prescribe, create food plans, recommend supplements or interpret medical results.

What is the difference between a health coach and a counsellor?

A counsellor is a licensed mental health professional. A health coach is a behaviour change specialist who partners with clients to create meaningful, sustainable changes for optimal health.
I bring a trauma-informed sensibility to my coaching, though I am not certified (yet) in any trauma-informed modality.

What kind of conditions, situations or diseases do you have experience with?

I work with clients suffering from chronic pain/fibromyalgia, significant digestive issues, Celiac disease and non Celiac gluten sensitivity, foggy brain, cognitive decline, and Type 2 diabetes. I support care givers to manage their stress, as well as the needs of the person or people they are caring for. I offer support to clients who want to soften the edges of anxiety, depression, problematic traits of ADHD and other types of neurodiversity.

I work with patients and their clinicians to successfully complete a recommended treatment or course of action, such as an elimination process, specialized testing, detoxification…

I support patients in their preparation for medical appointments, so that they get the best experience and information possible.

Will I have to change my diet and start yoga?

That is up to you. I will never tell you what to do and I promise I won’t tell you to eat kale. Whatever you decide to change or try, I will be there to support you.
